This is my hunch:
Secrets are sacred.
Sacredness is, oftentimes, secret.
Secrecy is not concealment, nor is it lie.
Rather, secrets can act as vessels for perennial truths.
Sacredness does not concern itself with morals.
It is neither good nor evil,
correct or incorrect,
positive or negative.
I am compelled by the secrecy of the sacred. This understanding of sacredness is also a praise of secrets as a form of assurance: an offering that renders unnecessary the need to dictate or establish definitive answers.
Through my work I navigate the secrecy of the sacred as an existential impulse immanent in non-tangible phenomena such as deep time; buried unconscious attitudes, nostalgias, and impulses; ta’wil (recitals of the soul); the theatre of the mind and its affections; and the logic of irrationality.
This exploration emerges from the constant state of ambivalence that growing up in Colombia entailed. The manifestation of this ambivalence in my work is rooted both in public events such as violence and the slow deterioration of cultural and belonging apparatuses, as well as private affairs such as my relationship with the territory, landscape, people, and my subsequent departure from the country.
Now I encounter these experiences and remnants largely by a distance that emphasises emptiness. As the public and private blur and overlap, I wish to caress that emptiness. Instead of attempting to resolve these preoccupations rationally my inquiry allows them to remain permeable, lingering with these affects while it listens to its ruins.
A fundamental axis of my work is the exploration of the body. While the anatomical body remains significant in it, I am equally interested in the body as presence, as figure, as ruin, as vessel, as site. Much of my work revolves around paper due to its fragility, malleable surface, and quiet physical presence. A presence that reclaims to be excessive and interminable: to become trapío.
